Eco One Solutions Spares the Environment, Helps Needy Families

Natick, MA - November 2009

e1s-logo4ECO-ONE Solutions, a subsidiary of the Natick-based Integrated Green Building Solutions, recently came to the rescue of Romeo Lopez, Building Services Manager of Babson College’s Facilities Department. Babson recently up-graded one dormitory full of furniture which included approximately 70 beds, desks, chairs, and chests still in very useable condition. Romeo’s responsibility was to find a better home for the leftovers than the landfill. He contacted Regional Sales Manager. Susan Evans. to see if she could help. After calling a number of possible charitable organizations, Susan found Household Goods Recycling Massachusetts receptive to her call. Joe Chappell, HGRM Director and volunteer, responded happily to the need, rounded up other volunteers and scheduled their trucks to make the pick-up at Babson College. HGRM is an Acton based 400 volunteer organization which provides home furnishings for needy people serving approximately 4000 Massachusetts families annually. In addition to the furniture, Babson also made a donation of $500.

MassRecycle Awards ECO-ONE Solutions 2009 Business Green Binnie Recycling Award

massrecycle2MassRecycle, the Massachusetts Recycling Coalition, has announced the recipients of the 2009 Green Binnie awards and has named ECO-ONE Solutions the 2009 Business Green Binnie Recycling Award winner. The Green Binnie awards acknowledge individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to recycling in the state. The awards were presented at MassRecycle’s 20th Anniversary Celebration & Annual Recycling Awards on Thursday, November 12th, 2009 at the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation in Waltham.

Lisa Alexander to speak at Poconos Tourism Day May 13

Lisa Alexander, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for Integrated Green Building Solutions, will be a featured speaker at the 15th annual Pocono Mountains Tourism Day on May 13 at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort (Shawnee on Delaware, Penn.).

The theme of this year’s event is “Turning Green into Green,” focusing on how the tourism industry can save money through energy conservation and other “green” strategies.

Corporate Social Responsibility is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model. Through CSR, businesses assume responsibility for the impact of their activities on the environment, consumers, employees and the public.

Alexander will make a presentation, moderate two panels and run afternoon workshops for this event, which runs from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. She will demonstrate how local tourism can benefit from CSR.

Nader Ardalan joins Integrated Green

Nader Ardalan, an award-winning architect and planner with extensive international experience, has joined the Integrated Green team as an affiliate. Integrated Green Building Solutions, LLC, is a Natick, Massachusetts-headquartered firm that provides consulting services and economical solutions for sustainable building projects, including construction waste management, recycling, and “green” building operations.

Ardalan, president of Ardalan Associates in Boston, will provide guidance in integrating sustainable designs into the planning process of buildings.

Specifically, he will serve as the lead architect for iGreen projects in the Middle East. He is currently collaborating with iGreen on two sustainability projects:

▪ Development of a master plan and concept design of a sustainable, low-carbon community of 7,500 Abu Dhabi residents on a 320,000 square-meter site. This project is expected to reduce energy consumption 60 percent, utilizing renewable energy sources.

▪ Design of the Intelligent Tower, a sustainable, 70-story Office Tower in Doha, Qatar, that will fostering a healthy and productive work environment while minimizing energy consumption and utilizing innovative photovoltaic arrays and other energy-efficient strategies and technologies.

“Nader is a tremendous addition to our team,” said Steven Blum, president and CEO of Integrated Green. “He not only has a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience but also a lot of enthusiasm and energy.”

Ardalan, with more than 40 years of architectural experience, has won a number of international design competitions, including the Citizen’s Bank Headquarters in Providence, R.I., and the Abu Dhabi Oil Company Headquarters of ADMA/OPCO. He has been a Visiting Professor at Harvard, Yale, MIT and Tehran University.

“I look forward to complementing my work with that of Integrated Green,” said Ardalan. “I have many years of facilitating the architectural process in a way that supports sustainability. This is our common goal.”

Eco One demonstrates recycling benefits to N.H. Grocers

(Concord, N.H. – April 22, 2009) For grocery store owners who want to save money and energy, recycling construction waste and reusing surplus property is a good place to start. That was the focus of a presentation by John Gundling, President of Eco One Solutions, at the New Hampshire Grocers Association Government Day/Annual Meeting in Concord, N.H., on April 22.

“Since it was also Earth Day, the Association felt this would be a very relevant topic,” said Gundling, whose Natick, Massachusetts-based consulting firm specializes in waste management and recycling. “There are many opportunities to not only save money but also protect the environment.”

With many New Hampshire grocers opting to remodel and renovate, rather than open new stores, the issue of waste recycling has become a hot topic.

“Recycling construction waste makes sense on several different levels,” explained Gundling. “It is less expensive than simple disposal, saves energy and can earn extra LEED credits. Plus, you’re reducing the amount of C&D materials disposed in landfills or combustion facilities.”

Typical renovation projects require the removal of waste materials, such as steel, concrete, masonry, wood, gypsum and even the cardboard from shipping boxes. The replacement of furniture and property also creates disposal issues that can best be solved through reuse. Eco One Solutions (E1S) runs a Surplus Reuse Program that distributes furniture and other property to charitable organizations.

E1S generally achieves recycling rates of more than 95 percent, well above the industry standard. This results in monetary savings of 25 to 30 percent when compared to simple disposal into a landfill. And that doesn’t take into account the obvious environmental benefits.

“This presentation was very timely and there was great interest,” said John Dumais, President and Executive Director of the New Hampshire Grocers Association. “It applies very well to many of our members. With Eco One, there is someone local who can help them with these issues. It particularly opened the eyes of some of the smaller retailers who may have surplus equipment and really don’t know what to do with it.”

Gundling’s firm does more than provided solutions, however. “In addition to our work, we’re trying to do is educate businesses, government officials and others about the benefits of recycling and reuse,” he said. “If more people knew about the alternatives to simple disposal, we’d all be a lot better off.”

Earth Day Expo
Later in the day, E1S and its parent company, Integrated Green Building Solutions, LLC, manned booths at an Earth Day Expo at the capitol building in Concord. They were among 15 companies invited to display their services to the members of the State Legislature and their staff.

“This Earth Day Expo was a unique opportunity to meet with public policy-makers to discuss how the implementation of sustainable building practices can provide social, economic and environmental benefits,” said Larry Rosenberg, COO of Integrated Green.

Eco One Solutions partners with Habitat for Humanity

Eco One Solutions (E1S), an innovative, Natick, Massachusetts-headquartered company that specializes in reuse and recycling, has entered into a formal partnership with the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Through this arrangement, E1S will provide the store with donations of furniture and other property. The Bridgeport ReStore will then distribute this property to needy businesses and families in the area. The goal is to similarly engage other ReStores in the New England-New York area and, eventually, around the country.

By so doing, Eco One Solutions and Habitat for Humanity Coastal Fairfield County will not only be helping people in need but making a positive impact on the environment.

“About 90 percent of surplus furniture is dumped into a landfill,” explains John Gundling, president of Eco One Solutions, a subsidiary of Integrated Green Building Solutions (www.integratedgreen.com). “The material has to be transported and processed, and that uses a significant amount of energy. By reusing the property, we are saving energy and reducing harmful emissions. Not only that, but we are donating it to people who can really use some help.”

As part of recent laboratory renovation projects at Yale University in New Haven, E1S redistributed 59 tons of furniture, which saved 455 barrels of oil, enough to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 745 tons. That is equivalent to taking 38 cars off the road for one year (source for calculations: Northeast Recycling Council).

Through its work in Construction Waste Management Recycling, Eco One Solutions has access to surplus furniture and property. This property is typically part of a renovation project or a client request to downsize or replace furniture. E1S’s Surplus Reuse Program typically costs 25-30 percent less than simple disposal, making it a popular and cost-effective option for these types of projects.

Lisa Alexander, dubbed the “Queen of Green” by her colleagues in the energy efficiency and sustainability fields, is the newest member of Integrated Green Building Solutions. As Director of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), she will be developing and implementing programs for businesses in the greater New York City area.

Corporate Social Responsibility is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model. Through CSR, businesses assume responsibility for the impact of their activities on the environment, consumers, employees and the public. Essentially, CSR is the deliberate inclusion of public interest into corporate decision-making, and the honoring of a triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit.
“My goal is to ramp up the CSR participation in this area,” said Alexander, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional.

“There are many corporations in the metropolitan area that are looking to get involved but don’t have the resources to dedicate staff to CSR. That’s where I come in. I can tailor a program to address their needs, help them get started and provide ongoing support.”

In her quest to promote “green living,” Alexander has traveled throughout the United States and to Europe.
A former model and actress in New York City, Alexander produced, wrote and hosted her own television home improvement Show, “Room for Improvement,” which aired in the 1999-2000 season on broadcast and cable networks in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
She now tackles the challenge of implementing major changes with businesses in the country’s second-largest city. “I really wanted to get into a larger market where I could make a bigger difference,” said Alexander. “Large corporations have the biggest carbon footprint and my job is to make them greener.
